Thanks for the help! Those "place holder" icons are called "Junction Points." They were created to ease the transition from the older file systems into the new one. I'm new to win 7. I use "Control D" and I get the same results. I tried drag & drop and "add current location to Favorites" but nothing works. All the folders in the Favorites in the Windows Explorer side pane disappeared. Also, at that "yourname" level you will see the "My Pictures" folder (when it used to be under "My Documents" on the old XP structure.
