It was easy to fix. As previously posted, go to Utilities > Audio Midi Setup > Built-in Input Once there, drag the toggles next to "1" and "2" all the way to the right. BTW, this is the wrong thread for this - the thread is explicitly about the _internal_ mic, while we're talking about an external mic here.
